Boys will be Boy (Scout)s, but they start as Cub Scouts

If you’re looking for some good, wholesome activities that don’t involve more ‘screen time’ for one or more grade-school-age boys this fall, look no further than the Rachel Carson Elementary School (RCES) Multipurpose room. That’s where the monthly meetings of Cub Scout Pack 221 are held.

Cub Scout Pack 221 is based in Kentlands/Lakelands and is sponsored by the Kentlands Community Foundation (KCF). Cub Scouts is open to boys in Kindergarten through 5th grade.  Older boys can enroll in one of several local Boy Scout packs, and older boys and girls can participate in Sea Scouts and Venture Scouting.

Cub Scout Pack 221’s goal is to provide opportunities for adventure and citizenship for young boys and their families. And Cubs learn useful skills like setting up a tent, helping to prepare food on a campfire and outdoor sports such as archery.

This past school year, Pack 221 organized a Fall overnight campout, an overnight adventure on the Battleship New Jersey, and helped organize the Kentlands first-ever Campout on the Lawn. Additionally, Pack 221 organized nature hikes, an evening of adventure climbing in trees, and a bike safety rodeo.  Pack 221 carried the flag for the Kentlands Day Parade in May and our pack was selected to be on the court for the National Anthem during a Washington Wizards home game.  The pack participates in community service such as decorating the Kentlands Manor Senior Home for the holiday season, and cleaning-up trash from the grounds of RCES in honor of Earth Day. We collected 40 bags of groceries last year for donation to a local food bank in time for Thanksgiving.  One of the key goals of scouting is to reinforce the values that have allowed the Boys Scouts to be an enduring international organization.

Monthly Pack Meetings, which include all K through 5th-grade levels (and siblings are always welcomed), are held the 3rd Tuesday at RCES from 6:45pm to 8:00pm starting in October. Den Meetings, arranged by grade levels or “Dens,” are typically held twice per month at different locations in the area and will start-up in September.

A ‘Join Scouting Night’ will be held on Monday September 18th 6:45pm-8:00pm in the RCES Multipurpose room (next to the gym).  For further information about Pack 221, please contact Janet Griffiths, at or 774-578-5762.
